Before diving into our instruction section, it's important we clarify and make sense of our definition of "Flat" and "Media" mail.
We ship "Flat" mail through DHL SmartMail Flats.
Your item may qualify as "Flat" mail if you're shipping items such as (but not limited to):
- Direct marketing material
- Annual Reports
- Enrollment Kits
The only items DHL will NOT ship via SmartMail Flats are First Class Mail (personal correspondence, bills or statements, handwritten material, etc. which you wouldn't be using ShipMonk to handle anyhow) or Hazmat mail.
Your products can almost certainly qualify to be Flat Mail if they meet the following weight and dimension criteria:

Height: 5" - 12" maximum
Thickness: 0.009" - 0.75" maximum (Uniform thickness within 0.25")

We ship "Media" mail through USPS Media Mail
USPS is restrictive on the types of media that can be sent through them. Media mail rates are limited to the items listed in the list below:
- Books (at least eight pages)
- Printed music and test materials
- Video and sound recordings
- Printed educational charts
- Medical loose-leaf pages and binders
- Computer-readable media
NOTE: Video games, computer drives, and digital drives do not qualify for Media Mail prices.
Media Mail can be used for shipments of any of the above items up to 70 lbs.

Step 1. Compile the SKUs you want sent as Flat or Media Mail
Step 2. Open a support ticket and provide the list of SKUs (click here to go to our Contact US page) you need changed to Flat or Media mail. A Happiness Engineer will then make the administrative changes to switch your products to Flat or Media mail and inform you when they're complete.
We handle the changes this way because we ship Flat and Media mail through our accounts with USPS and DHL and are subject to fines and penalties if inventory is shipped through these methods that doesn't properly qualify. We will verify that your inventory qualifies first and make the changes.
Step 3. Once your requests are approved, please follow the instructions in Mapping Shipping to insure you assign flats and media mail as your prioritized shipping methods. You'll also want to make sure you have backup shipping methods in place in the event an order contains SKUs that are neither Flat or Media, it will default to another method.
1. What if I have Flat Mail and Media Mail items in the same order?
You will NOT be able to ship using Flat Mail and Media Mail if you have both Flat Mail and Media items together in the same order. You will need to have backup shipping methods mapped in place for this situation. Orders without backups will go to the "Action Required" section of your orders tab and require you to remap the shipping on that order should this occur.
2. Can I still ship via media mail if my order has mostly media mail except for one unit that is a regular item?
No, all the SKUs in an order MUST be either all Flat or all media.
